It’s that time of the year again, the end-of-year whirlwind where we’re all on the go and it feels like a sprint to the finish line. As we inch closer to the last day, my mind starts racing about getting my students ready for their summer break. We start to fret over what they’ll remember and what might slip away during those warm, sunny months. In our education circles, we call it the summer slide. So, today, I’m explaining how I keep those crucial math skills from taking a vacation. It’s all about summer math review practice!
Why Summer Math Review is Effective
Why is summer math review the real deal? When we get down to it, it’s all about consistency. Sure, summer is prime time for chilling by the pool and soaking up the sun. And. . . while I am all for the needed break that our students need, we don’t want those math skills to take a backseat. By doing some math practice throughout the summer, we’re helping our students’ brain muscles stay active. This way they will be ready for action when the new school year begins.
The best part is that summer math review is just that. . . review. That means that everything presented over the summer has already been taught. It’s a nudge to the brain that says “Hey, I remember this.”
It is easy for students to do on their own without needing direct instruction or lots of help.
It doesn’t need to take a lot of time either. Just a few minutes a day can make all the difference in keeping the math concepts fresh.
Summer Math Review Benefits Students, Parents, and Teachers
When summer rolls around, the last thing our kiddos want to think about is school stuff. Who can blame them, right? Summer is all about freedom, fun, and soaking up every ounce of sunshine. While our students might not be jumping for joy at the thought of solving math problems over the break, there’s a whole world of benefits waiting for them (and us!) if they do.
Students
Summer math review helps our students retain the knowledge and skills they’ve acquired throughout the school year. This prevents the dreaded “summer slide,” where learning loss happens naturally during the break.

Summer Math Review for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades
Now that you know how summer math review benefits everyone, I’d like to introduce you to my Summer Math Review Practice packets. These low-prep resources are designed to fight learning loss without taking lots of time away from summer fun.
Your kids will have only five math problems per day. One problem from each of the math strands: operations & algebraic thinking, numbers & operations in base ten, numbers & operations – fractions, measurement & data, and geometry. One of the best parts of the resource is that it’s flexible and can meet your needs. You can use as many of the weeks as you need. There are 12 weekly pages total, so there will be plenty of practice for all!
You might even introduce the pages during the last couple weeks of the school year and send home the remaining sets for summer practice.
I have a summer math review packet for 3rd graders moving to 4th grade, 4th graders moving to 5th grade, and 5th graders moving to 6th grade. Each packet targets all the math standards for the grade level that was just completed. They make it a breeze to keep math skills sharp without overwhelming your students or their families. Simply print them out, hand them over, and watch the math skills stick around.
How to Encourage Students to Work on the Summer Math Review
As you might expect, this might be the hardest part of the summer math review. But don’t worry, there are different ways we can kick up the motivation and get our students pumped up to tackle their summer math review.
Some schools offer prizes to those who complete their summer packets. If your school doesn’t do a school-wide program, you could offer an incentive to your students. Just have them complete the packet over the summer and bring it to you on the first day of school.
Prizes are typically small and not going to break the bank. This might include one or two “no homework passes” that students can use during the first grading period, a special “party” during the first week or two of school, or those coveted water bottle stickers that kids are crazy for.
Offering prizes for completing summer math review sets a positive example for all students. It shows them that hard work pays off and that putting in the effort over the summer break can lead to big rewards, physical or academic. It’s a simple yet effective way to motivate students and set them up for success in the new school year.
