I thrive on consistency and a structured schedule. Knowing what’s expected of me helps me get into the right mindset each day. As I continue to grow as an effective teacher, I’ve learned that my students also benefit from this. They naturally crave those boundaries, even without directly expressing them. When they know what’s expected, they can get into the right mindset to tackle the task at hand. Today, I’m sharing how having a routine, specifically a math morning routine, sets the stage for a successful class!
Benefits of a Morning Routine
The more I have implemented a morning routine, the more I see the benefits for my students! A routine sets a positive tone for the entire day. When our students start their day with a familiar and engaging activity, they feel more confident and ready to tackle new challenges.
This routine strengthens independence and responsibility. Our kiddos learn to manage their time effectively and understand the importance of consistency. They know what to expect and what’s expected of them, which reduces anxiety and increases focus.
A math morning routine helps build essential skills gradually. By practicing math every morning, our students reinforce their learning and make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. It helps them keep previously taught skills at the forefront of their mind since they are continuously using them. Plus, they grow in confidence as they become more and more familiar with each concept.
This routine encourages a growth mindset, which is important now more than ever. They start seeing math as a fun and achievable part of their day rather than a daunting task. Once they shift their perspective, they enjoy learning and solving problems, boosting their enthusiasm for math.
Incorporating a morning routine also provides a calm and consistent start to each day. Students can unpack and begin with a review activity, while you take care of the morning administrative tasks. It’s a win-win for everyone!
What Can I Use for a Math Morning Routine?
Let’s talk about what we can use for our math morning routine. One of my favorite tools is a daily math spiral review. If you’re not familiar with it, spiral review is a method where our students regularly revisit and practice skills they’ve learned throughout the year. Instead of moving on and never looking back, we keep those skills fresh by integrating them into our daily routine.
Spiral reviews help solidify students’ understanding. When our kiddos repeatedly encounter the same types of problems, they become more comfortable and confident with the material. It becomes muscle memory for their brains!
Spiral review also ensures that no skill gets left behind. In the hustle and bustle of the school year, it’s easy for our students to forget what they learned a few months ago. By continuously looping back to those concepts, we make sure they stay sharp and ready for any challenge.
Another great benefit of spiral review is that it helps identify areas where some of our students might need extra support. If certain problems keep tripping them up, we can spot those patterns and address them before they become bigger issues. It’s a proactive approach that keeps all of our students on track.
Incorporating spiral review into our morning routine gives our students a solid foundation to build on. It’s a simple, yet powerful, way to ensure they’re always moving forward, confident in their skills, and ready to learn more. Let’s dive deeper into what a math spiral review can look like!
How to Use Spiral Review for Your Math Morning Routine
Daily Math Spiral Review is an amazing resource I designed to give students practice with math skills throughout the school year. What’s great about it is that the difficulty level gradually increases, which helps keep your students challenged and engaged.
In my classroom, I’ve found several effective ways to incorporate Daily Math Review into our routine. One of my favorites is using it as morning work. As soon as my students walk in, they know exactly what to do. They unpack, make their lunch choice, and get settled in their seats. Once they are ready, they take out their math binders and flip to the tab where we keep our math review pages. This sets a focused and productive tone for the day. They complete the four problems for the day while I can take care of things like taking attendance.
I copy the pages front to back, giving each of my students a week’s worth of practice on just one sheet of paper. Each day of the week, my students work through four math problems. There is a blank space for them to show their work as they solve the problems!
You can print the pages with or without grade-level labels, which is perfect for differentiating instruction based on your students’ needs. This flexibility allows you to tailor the practice to different ages and skill levels. This way, we can ensure that every student gets the support they need.
Change classes throughout the day? No worries! You can also use Daily Math Review as a warm-up at the beginning of math class to help them get into math mode.
