Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could teach a math concept once, and our kiddos just held on to that information forever? We’d either be out of a job or surrounded by little geniuses! One of the main reasons I started using a spiral review in my math classes was because I wanted my students to keep engaging with the math concepts we’d studied. I noticed that when they completed these reviews, the concepts seemed to stick better. Their confidence soared, and suddenly, math felt a lot more approachable! Today, I’m sharing with you why spiral reviews are so important. In the end, I have some fantastic resources to help you start using them in your classroom.
What is a Spiral Review?
Remember how we used to cram for tests back in school, only to forget everything a week later? Now that I am a teacher, it is definitely NOT something I want to happen to my students. That’s where a spiral review comes in. It’s this awesome strategy where, instead of learning something once and moving on, our students keep revisiting the same concepts over and over all year long. They tackle them in different ways and at different times assuring that the concepts stay fresh in their minds.
Keep in mind that a spiral review isn’t just about repetition. What’s neat is that it naturally builds connections between different math concepts. When our students see how addition is related to multiplication or how fractions tie into division, it creates a web of understanding that makes math feel more cohesive and less like a series of isolated topics.
The best part is that it also helps to prevent learning loss that happens during breaks and summer. By continuously reviewing and reinforcing what they’ve learned, our students retain more knowledge over breaks! This means they come back to school ready to build on what they know instead of having to relearn old material.
The Benefits of a Spiral Review
We touched on a few of the reasons why spiral reviews are important to our students’ learning journey. Below, I share a few more benefits that make it a must-use tool in the classroom.
Spiral Reviews Increase Confidence
There’s nothing better than seeing a student’s face light up when they finally understand a tricky concept. With a spiral review, this happens more often because our kiddos get multiple chances to tackle and master these concepts.
For instance, when we first introduced fractions, many of my students felt overwhelmed. However, with a spiral review, they revisited fractions through different activities.
Each successful review session, whether it was solving a problem correctly or explaining it to a classmate, added a layer of confidence. Over time, I saw those uncertain expressions turn into excited smiles and heard more students say, “Hey, I can do this!” It’s amazing to watch them grow and become more self-assured in their abilities, especially when it comes to math.
Spiral Reviews Reduce Anxiety
Math, in general, can be stressful! When students constantly review and practice, the material feels familiar, and the anxiety lessens. I’ve seen this happen in my own classroom time and time again. Before we started using a spiral review, test days were filled with nervous energy and last-minute cramming.
Now, my students walk into test days with calm confidence. They’ve seen the material multiple times in different contexts. They’re not approaching a test with a “one and done” attitude. Instead, they’ve been building their knowledge bit by bit.
With spiral math reviews, students experience a steady reinforcement of concepts over time, leading to increased confidence and less anxiety in general. As they encounter familiar material regularly, their anxiety diminishes. This allows them to tackle new challenges with ease and assurance.
Spiral Reviews Help to Identify Learning Gaps
A spiral review is also a great diagnostic tool. It helps me spot where my students are struggling early on. I might notice that while most students are comfortable with fractions, some are having trouble grasping decimals.
Identifying these gaps early allows you to provide targeted support and interventions to ensure that every student receives the assistance they need to succeed. By addressing these areas of difficulty quickly, we can prevent them from snowballing into larger challenges later on.
During one of these warm-ups, I might see a student repeatedly making errors with decimal placement. This early detection allows me to step in right away. I can offer targeted support like additional practice problems or small group teaching. By catching these gaps early, I can provide the support they need exactly when they need it, ensuring no one falls behind.
Spiral Reviews Provide Continuous Feedback
With a spiral review, you get continuous feedback on how well your students are grasping the material. During our daily quick review sessions, I might notice that my students are consistently struggling with multiplication. This immediate feedback allows me to quickly adjust my teaching strategy. If multiplication isn’t sticking, I can try new approaches, like introducing visual aids, interactive games, or real-life scenarios to make the concept more relatable.
This process keeps learning fluid and responsive. It helps me to address issues as they arise and keep all my students on track. By using the information provided in the spiral review, it is easy to stay on top of the skills students are mastering or struggling with.
Additionally, because a spiral review fosters a culture of continuous improvement in the classroom, students learn to embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth rather than as failures. When I can quickly give feedback it helps my students understand that mastery is not achieved in a single lesson! But instead, through consistent practice and refinement over time. This mindset shift encourages resilience and perseverance, crucial qualities for success not only in math but in all areas of learning and life.
Spiral Review and Differentiation
One of the things I love about using a spiral review is how easy it makes differentiation. Let’s say I have a student who’s struggling with division while others are breezing through it. I can easily tweak the review activities to meet the needs of each of my students.
Alternatively, I can use the information I gather through the spiral review to differentiate my instruction in class. For a student who may be struggling, I can do small group reteaching and provide additional resources like online tutorials or hands-on activities.
For students who have mastered division, I can introduce more challenging problems or incorporate division into real-world scenarios to deepen their understanding.

Implementing a Spiral Review in Your Classroom
Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of using a spiral review, let’s explore how you can incorporate it into your classroom routine. No matter the grade you teach, there are plenty of ways to make a spiral review work in your classroom. Just choose one or more of the options below to easily weave a spiral review into your daily schedule.
1. Morning Work
I love using a spiral review activity as part of my morning routine. It’s a great way to start the day off on the right foot, giving your students a chance to warm up their math brains before diving into new material.
2. Warm-up in Math Block
During my math block, I like to use the spiral review as a warm-up activity. It sets a positive tone for the lesson ahead and helps my students transition smoothly into the class. And. . . since each day is only a few problems it leaves plenty of time for the day’s lesson.
TEACHER TIP: If you’d like to combine the morning work and math block option, I suggest having students complete the daily section as part of their morning routine. Then use the first few minutes of your math block to review the problems together as a class.
3. Learning Stations or Math Workshop
When planning out my learning stations, I try to incorporate a spiral review activity as one of the rotations. I might choose a skill that students have had difficulty with or I might pick something we haven’t seen in a while. It’s a great way to use center time to review previously learned skills.
4. Homework
If you find it hard to add one.more.thing to your daily schedule, then using a sprial math review as your math homework is the perfect answer. The great thing about a spiral review is that it is just that. . . a review. Students will be only be working on skills and concepts that have already been taught. That means completing them independently at home should not be a problem.
5. Review Before High-Stakes Testing
As our “favorite” week of the year approaches, I use spiral review activities to review all of the concepts covered throughout the year. It is a great way to prepare my kiddos for standardized testing. They get a mental review and a boost of confidence going into the tests.
